I believe it was primarily political revolution.

Even though the revolution was triggered by economic policies (unfair new taxation without representation), colonists who fought for the revolution fight for the desire to be treated like equal citizens rather than being controlled like puppet by the British empire
Before the unfair taxation system, majority of colonists actually like the business relationship that the British empire made for them.

In 1976, Taiwan bearing the name "Republic of China" or ROC was not permitted to participate in the Montreal Games because Canada, the host country, recognized the PRC or People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of "China".

It was only in 1984 where Taiwan competed for the first time using the name "Chinese Taipei" at the Saravejo Winter Games
