I believe it was primarily political revolution. 

Even though the revolution was triggered by economic policies (unfair new taxation without representation), colonists who fought for the revolution fight for the desire to be treated like equal citizens rather than being controlled like puppet by the British empire
Before the unfair taxation system, majority of colonists actually like the business relationship that the British empire made for them.

By doing so, they violated the Treaty of London, which is why Great Britain, that was bound to guard the neutrality of Belgium, entered the war.
