The events that Truth describes in "An Account of an Experience with discrimination" occur immediately after the Civil War. This was the so called Reconstruction era. It was a stormy period since the nation was attempting to reconstruct South by transitioning 4 million newly freed blacks from slavery to a free-labor society.
