Your dependent variable "depends" on the independent variable. In this question your dependent variable is going to be plant growth. Your plant growth "depends" on the amount of sugar in the water. 

Therefore, your independent variable is the amount of sugar in the water.

So, the offspring of yellow caterpillars would most likely come out yellow (or green if it's in their genes), resulting in the yellow caterpillar offspring to be picked off more easily than the offspring of the green caterpillars.
