Labor is a factor of production constituted by the skills of workers who participate in the manufacturing process for the obtention of a good or service. It is owned by individuals and these offer their labor effort to companies in exchange for a retribution. Companies, in turn, need labor to sucesfully perform their production activities.

The three activities mentioned first: a farmer in a rice field, a weaver in a silk shop, a merchant on a caravan are examples of a person offering his/her skills, in this case his/her physical effort, in exchange for a retribution and therefore all of them are considered labor.
