Answer : The sample of Cl_2 effuses in, 350 seconds.

Solution : Given,

Effusion time of N_2 = 220 s

Molar mass of N_2 = 28 g/mole

Molar mass of Cl_2 = 71 g/mole

Rate of effusion : It is defined as the volume of gas effused in a given time 't'.

Formula used : Rate=\frac{Volume}{Time}

Or,

Rate of effusion : It is defined as the rate of effusion is directly proportional to the square root of the mass of the gas.

\text{ Rate of effusion}\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{\text{ Mass of gas}}}

From the two expressions, we conclude that the relation between the time and the mass of gas is,

\sqrt{M}\propto t

or, \sqrt{\frac{M_1}{M_2}}=\frac{t_1}{t_2}     .........(1)

where,

M_1 = molar mass of N_2 gas

M_2 = molar mass of Cl_2 gas

t_1 = time of effusion of N_2 gas

t_2 = time of effusion of Cl_2 gas

Now put all the given values in equation (1), we get

\sqrt{\frac{28g/mole}{71g/mole}}=\frac{220s}{t_2}

By rearranging the terms, we get

t_2=349.8s=350s

Therefore, the sample of Cl_2 effuses in, 350 seconds.

<span>According to Graham's gas effusion law, the rate effusion of N2 is 1.591 times greater than that of Cl2. To find the time, multiply the rate and the time. 220 x 1.591 = 350s.</span>

A 4-kilogram ball moving at 8 m/sec to the right collides with a 1-kilogram ball at rest. After the collision,
elena-14-01-66 [18.8K]
Conservation of momentum: total momentum before = total momentum after

Momentum = mass x velocity

So before the collision:
4kg x 8m/s = 32
1kg x 0m/s = 0
32+0=32

Therefore after the collision
4kg x 4.8m/s = 19.2
1kg x βm/s = β
19.2 + β = 32

Therefore β = 12.8 m/s

1. In an experiment, a positively charged oil droplet weighing 6.5 x 10-15 N is held stationary
blagie [28]

The charge on the droplet must be 1.2\cdot 10^{-18} C

Explanation:

In order for the oil droplet to be in equilibrium, the force of gravity acting on it (the weight, acting downward) must be equal to the electrical force acting upward.

The gravitational force is:

F_g = 6.5 \cdot 10^{-15} N

which is equivalent to the weight of the droplet.

The electric force is given by:

F_E = qE

where

q is the charge on the oil droplet

E=5.3\cdot 10^3 N/C is the magnitude of the electric field

Since the two forces must be equal,

F_G = F_E\\F_G = qE

And solving for q,

q=\frac{F_G}{E}=\frac{6.5\cdot 10^{-15} N}{5.3\cdot 10^3}=1.2\cdot 10^{-18} C
