What happens in metaphase 1 in meiosis

In metaphase 1, the chromosomes are arranged on the metaphase plate and are attached onto the spindle fibers. They are in the middle of the cell and are pulled by the the spindle fibers.

I believe the stuff in the nucleus starts to pull apart and the spindle fibers appear.
