The president <em>pro tempore</em>

Under the US Constitution, the Vice President of the United States serves as president of the Senate.  When the Vice President will be absent from proceedings of the Senate, he appoints a president <em>pro tempore </em>("for the time being") who presides over Senate proceedings during his absence.
