What is sovereignty? Why would sovereignty be a concern for the people of Hawaii? in 1884
mamaluj [8]

"Sovereignty" means control over one's own nation or territory.

Hawaii was concerned with sovereignty in 1884 because in that year the Kingdom of Hawaii was signing a treaty that gave the United States "the exclusive right to enter the harbor of the Pearl River in the Island of Oahu" (in other words, Pearl Harbor), "and to establish and maintain there a coaling and repair station for the use of vessels of the United States, and to that end the United States may improve the entrance to said harbor and do all other things needful to the purpose aforesaid."    (You can tell I'm quoting from the actual treaty there.)

When the treaty was reaffirmed and extended in 1887, King Kalaukaua of Hawaii said to the Hawaiian legislature that his government had assurances from the US government that the treaty did "not cede any territory or part with or impair any right of sovereignty or jurisdiction on the part of the Hawaiian Kingdom."

Ultimately, however, in an age when imperialism was common throughout the world, the United States did take over control of Hawaii.  In the late 1800s, the US supported American sugar planters who overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy, and by 1900 Hawaii became a US territory.

Why did the war in Vietnam result in such widespread opposition? Points to consider include reasons for U.S. involvement in the
Stels [109]
The Vietnam War faced mass opposition for several reasons inlcuding:

1) Unfair draft practices- Many citizens who were affluent and had connections were able to avoid being drafted by the US military. This resulted in a majority of the soldiers being individuals from lower-middle class socioeconomic groups. Many citizens felt that this was unfair, an dubbed Vietnam a rich man's fought that happened to be fought by the poor.

2) Monetary cost- The Vietnam War cost America billions of dollars over the course of the 2 decades of their involvement in trying to keep South Vietnam out of the control of the Soviet Union/communism.

3) Casualties- The US military suffered over 50,000 deaths due to this war. Americans felt that this was unacceptable.

Do you believe the Berlin Airlift was successful? Why or why not?
iris [78.8K]
Yes the allies showed they could reliably deliver food for the majority of the population and showed how dominant the allied Air Forces were while on the flip side they were causing food shortages on east Germany which the Russians believed could lead to an over throw of the government so I would say it was very successful
