To join items in a list we use a comma. A conjunction is used in different situations such as joining words, sentences, clauses or phrases, there are some conjunctions that could go in the middle of the two parts that they are joining and there are others that go at the beginning of the sentence, they have different intentions as contrast, purpose, result, etc...
