In Golding's "The Lord of the Flies," Ralph sought to recreate the order and function of that they left behind in the civilized world, while Jack began to enjoy the power and savagery the island's location allowed. During the meeting where Jack challenged Ralph, Ralph held the meeting at dusk, when it was getting dark, and when Jack had returned from a successful--and brutal--pig hunt. The dark's diminishing of Ralph's authority coupled with Jack's sense of savage power gave Jack the sense of power to challenge Ralph. He used fear of the dark to influence the smaller boys to his side.

Does krakauer have an acceptable background to speak with authority on this subject? Why or Why not?
Charra [1.4K]

Yes, Krakauer has an acceptable background to speak with authority on this subject.

Krakauer has an acceptable background to speak on the subject because he has scores of outdoor experience; throughout the book, he makes mention of his climbing adventures throughout the book. In fact, written a number of books and articles about his outdoor experiences (e.g. Into Thin Air). Other than that, he knows quite a number of outdoor experts. Furthermore, Krakauer seems to understand Chris McCandless because of his own experiences with his father.

4. Summarize Lord Arthur's first and second attempts at
kobusy [5.1K]

In the first murder, he poisons the victim. On the second attempt, he tries to send a bomb to the victim.

We can arrive at this answer because:

 • Lord Arthur receives a prophecy that he will be an assassin.
 • He is engaged and eager for marriage, but he is afraid to marry without having completed his destiny and therefore decides to become a murderer as soon as possible.
 • So he tries to poison his aunt and send dynamite to a university dean.
 • Both attempts fail and he is unable to murder either victim.

With this, we can see the theme that we should not try to manipulate fate, we should just wait for it to happen at the right time.
