One of the most consequential events of the arrival of Columbus in the American continent was the transmission of diseases carried by the Europeans and for which the native Indians didn´t have any anti-bodies.

The new germs decimated the Indians. Dozens of millons of Indians died as a result of smallpox and other illnesses. By the end of the 16th century, the reduction of the Indian population was nearly 80-90%, but it was also due to brutal treatment and slavery in the Spanish colonial possessions. And this brought another terrible event: the large-scale traffic of African slaves.
