Henry the navigator was a Portuguese prince and the third son of King John of Portugal. He was also called Infante Dom Henrique in Portuguese.  He wasn't a navigator but got this name because he organized many ocean voyages and started the Age of DIscovery. He opened a navigation school in Portugal for improving the tools and ships and is credited with discovering the first shipping routes directly from Europe to Asia for the Portuguese monarchy. He led crusades against Muslims for getting gold and colonizing the Atlantic islands. From 1419 till his death he made many expeditions along the west coast of Africa for securing trade routes and establish colonies. He played an important role in the development of maps and new ships which were ideal for exploring rough seas.
