The <em>Compromise of 1877</em> marked the end of the Reconstruction Era. With this event, the prevalence of the civil and political rights of African Americans was left in <em>great uncertainty.</em> Southern states legislatures passed a series of segregationist laws which declared the physical separation between whites and persons of color in schools, parks, and public transportation, among others.
