Aquatint is a printmaking technique that creates effects that look like ink washes or watercolors. This technique only produces areas of tone, rather than lines. This has meant that the technique is often used along with etching, which gives outlines. The technique was very popular between 1770 and 1830, but after this date, it lost ground to lithography and other techniques.
