The city was acquired by the United States from France during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Later, San Luis became the starting point for explorers of the West (like the expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark guided in part by the Spanish Manuel Lisa), trappers (as the so-called "hundred of Ashley" (Ashley's Hundred )) and settlers who migrated to the west.
