The major difference was their approach to slavery. The New England colonies were mostly against slavery because slavery wasn't part of their way of life (and because a lot of them recognized how horrible and sickening it was). The Southern colonies were for slavery because their economy was based completely on plantations and slaves. It was their way of life. Hope this helps! Please let me know if I'm wrong.
