The New England primer directly link religious obligation through David H. Watters who argues that the Primer was built on rote memorization. They define “self” by relating their life to the authority of God and His parents. Emory Elliot also argues that the Primer was part of the transformation and this turns the Puritans away from an angry and arising from God the Father to embrace the gentle and loving Jesus Christ.
