The Confederates, under the leadership of General Robert E. Lee, won the battle. But during the battle, as Jackson led a force of 28,000 soldiers on a move to come around the right flank of the Union position. The attack was successful, but in the evening (as it was getting dark), when Jackson led some of his troops in further pursuit of fleeing Union soldiers, some of his own men thought they were part of the Union army and opened fire on them. Jackson was struck by three bullets, and later developed pneumonia. He died on March 10, 1863,
