- As he strives to solve his enigma, Dimmesdale engages in a dark fight and a horrifying penance. He is more susceptible to temptation as a sinner. But for Dimmesdale, his success betrays his determination to come clean. His lectures get better as he endures more suffering. The more he works out, the more inspirational he is on Sunday, and the more his audience worships him.
