Dr. Hans Selye (whom we consider the father in the study of  stress), back in 1935, defined it as: The adaptive response of the organism to the various stressors. Called it  «General adaptation syndrome».

Selye described three stages of adaptation to stress:

• <u>Reaction alarm</u>: when the body detects the stressor.

• <u>Adaptation phase</u>: the body reacts to the stressor.

• <u>Exhaustion phase</u>: due to their duration or intensity they begin to  exhaust body defenses.

The word stress comes from the Greek word stringere, and means  ‘Cause tension’.  We can also use the definition that comes from the  physical. In this field, the word stress refers to  to the fatigue of the materials, that is, to the pressure exerted by a  body over another.
