The United States presidential election of 1796 was the third quadrennial presidential election. It was held from Friday, November 4 to Wednesday, December 7, 1796. It was the first contested American presidential election and the only one in which a president and vice president were elected from opposing tickets.

It was the first election to have two presidential nominees. It also was the only election where the president and the vice president were elected from opposite parties.

Ghella [55]

One of the great controversies was the heliocentric versus geocentric theories that were competing at the time. The idea that the Earth was not the center of the known universe was dismaying to the Roman Catholic Church at the time, which saw the Earth as a special part of Creation that had to be at the center of everything. With Kepler and Copernicus espousing theories that put the Sun at the center of the local solar system instead of the Universe, it put them at odds with the religious people in power at the time, and caused much strife to the scientists.

What were the conditions in the south and north during the great migration?
maks197457 [2]

The Great Migration was the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North, Midwest and West from about 1916 to 1970. Driven from their homes by unsatisfactory economic opportunities and harsh segregationist laws, many blacks headed north, where they took advantage of the need for industrial workers that first arose during the First World War. During the Great Migration, African Americans began to build a new place for themselves in public life, actively confronting racial prejudice as well as economic, political and social challenges to create a black urban culture that would exert enormous influence in the decades to come.
