The correct answer is D) the surrounding land was much more difficult to cultivate.

Many ancient civilizations in Africa developed near bodies of water because the surrounding land was much more difficult to cultivate.

In order to prosper and survive, many ancient civilizations in the continent needed water for basic activities such as washing, drinking, and the growth of crops. The extreme heat in the region and the necessity of hunting animals to get food made the ancient African people consider the option of living near bodies of water to cultivate easily. The best example is the Egyptian civilization that flourished in great measure due to the Nile River and the blessings it offered.

Now let’s look at B, which is also incorrect, Davis feared this would lead to war so he didn’t support it. Now C, C is also incorrect because as we already know he does not wish to go to war. This leave us with D the correct and only answer.
