    Often people think that the word criticism means to find fault or error. In everyday speech, that definition is acceptable, but it is not sufficient when writing about literature and particularly when writing here about the novel. The root of the word criticism is Greek.

    By criticism, the Greeks meant that a person should separate the whole into its parts, that a person should be able to see something for what it is. When a person acts as a critic, he analyzes things; he takes them apart; he attempts to ascertain the worth of what he analyzes--that is, he evaluates. He also attempts to find the meaning of all the parts and the whole--that is, he interprets.
