The excerpt best demontrates that Edna is changing.Victor sees that and has this attitude of begging her not to reveal something important.That is why he goes with her to the car.The main theme in the story is Edna´s awakening, this birth or rebirth is being evident through the attitude of both characters in this excerpt;Edna is self assured, teasing, Victor is pleading secrecy and discretion, something which could not be helped by the time the scene takes place.

As for the numbers, the rule is usually that numbers one through nine are spelled out whereas number 10 and up are written in numbers.  That said, you do not hyphenate the number with the word, so four-letter word would be correct.
