Lee, regarding the topic of duty, tells a story to serve as a role model for his son. While the Legislature of Connecticut was in session, there was a sudden darkness, like an eclipse, that scared the ones who were gathered. When they talked of adjourning the meeting, one man - the old Puritan, as Lee refers to him -, stood up and claimed he would like to be found doing his duty in case it was the day of judgment (the end of times). This concept of serving your country until the very end is rooted in patriotism. Robert E. Lee is teaching his son to serve his country, even if it is his last day on Earth.
