Answer:

Due to the large land area and the favorable climate, agriculture has always been very important for the United States. Despite that, only 3% of the working population still work in agriculture. Thanks to the flat terrain in large parts of the Midwest and the high level of technological development, agriculture has been thoroughly mechanized and production is still high. Many products are also exported by forestry.

Although the country was almost self-sufficient in the past, rising consumption, especially of energy, continues to make it dependent on certain imports. It is nevertheless the world's largest producer of both electricity and nuclear energy. It leads all nations in the production of liquefied natural gas, aluminum, sulfur, phosphates and salt. It is also a major producer of copper, gold, coal, petroleum, nitrogen, iron ore, silver, uranium, lead, zinc, mica, molybdenum and magnesium. Although production has fallen, the United States is a world leader in the production of pig iron and ferrous alloys, steel, motor vehicles and synthetic rubber.

The most important US export products are motor vehicles, aircraft, food, iron and steel products, electronic equipment, industrial and energy-generating machines, chemical products and consumer goods. Important import products include ore and metal scrap, petroleum and petroleum products, machinery, transport equipment (especially cars) and office products.

The most important trading partners of the US are Canada (the world's largest bilateral trade relationship), Mexico, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Germany.

The development of the economy has been spurred by the growth of a complex communication network. This not only consists of railways, roads, inland waterways and aviation, but also telephone, radio, television, computer (including the internet) and fax. This infrastructure has not only promoted agriculture and increased production, but also contributed to tourism revenues and the shift to a service-based economy.

All in all, the United States has a global dominating economy, and the average income per person is high.

The United States remained a largely agricultural nation until late in the 19th century. Unskilled workers fared poorly in the early U.S. economy, receiving as little as half the pay of skilled craftsmen, artisans, and mechanics. About 40 percent of the workers in the cities were low-wage laborers and seamstresses in clothing factories, often living in dismal circumstances. With the rise of factories, children, women, and poor immigrants were commonly employed to run machines.
