First of all they had to build the ships, and make sure there was enough room for the people and animals they had to bring along. They had to make sure that they were bringing enough food and water, to last them the whole trip. They had to calculate how far they were going to travel, and how long it was going to take to get them there. 
You should add in your answer that the reason that they were traveling to the US in the first place was to have religious freedom

Their lives for sure were quite bitter even after the civil war. After all, the war could not change the point of view of the landowners in the South in a fingerclick, that required much more time and patience.
