Corporate colonies were funded by joint stocks and allowed investors to have a vote on the way to run a colony. <span>Corporate colonies had a charter granted by the English monarch to stockholders.

<span>In 1624, the English monarch began to shift the colonies into royal colonies. Such colonies were under the direct control of the monarch. </span>Royal colonies were under the direct order of the king. He appointed the governors.
