Answer:

width of the border is 3 inches

Step-by-step explanation:

Given data

size = 8 inches by 10 inches

area = 144 square inches

to find out

width of the border

solution

first we consider width of border is x

area of new full rectangle =  (8 + 2x ) × ( 10 + 2x )

so we know  area of photo = 8 × 10 = 80 square inches

and area of border = 144 square inches that is given

so new area of photo with the border is 80 + 144 = 224 square inches

and we can say that

area of full rectangle  - area of the photograph = Area of Border

(8 + 2x) × (10 + 2x) – (80) = 144  square inches

80 + 16x + 20x + 4x^{2} – 80 = 144

4x^{2} + 36x – 144 = 0

solve thios equation we get

2x^{2} + 9x – 36 = 0

solve thios equation we get

(x + 12) (x – 3) = 0

so here x have two value one is negative and other is positive

so we consider only positive value

x = -12 or x = 3

width of the border is 3 inches

Joey Chestnut is trying to break his own record for eating the most whole hot dogs in 101010 minutes. He needs to eat more than
anygoal [31]

Answer:

9d+11\frac{1}{4}>72

Step-by-step explanation:

We are supposed to write an inequality to determine the number of hot dogs per minute Joey must eat for the last 9 minutes to break his record.

Let d represent the number of hot dogs Joey eats per minute for the next 9 minutes.

We have been given that after 1 minute, Joey has eaten 11\frac{1}{4} hot dogs.

Hot dogs eaten in next 9 minutes would be 9 times d that is 9d.

Total hot dogs eaten by Joey would be hot dogs eaten in 1 minute plus next 9 minutes: 9d+11\frac{1}{4}.

Since to break the record Joey needs to eat more than 72 hot dogs. We can represent this information in an inequality as:

9d+11\frac{1}{4}>72

Therefore, our required inequality would be 9d+11\frac{1}{4}>72.
