Steve Reich is a known avante-garde composer as well as one of the founder of the minimalist school of music. Given his interest in a variety of musical styles, he studied briefly at the University of Ghana learning Ghanian music and dancing customs. This exposure largely inspired his composition of Drumming, created in 1970.
