A primary election is an initial election round aimed at selecting which candidates to run for the general election. Primary elections can be both open and closed; the closed ones are for registered voters only.

In American politics, primary elections are important, especially in the context of presidential elections.  The primary elections are conducted as polls in individual states, with voters deciding how many delegates to vote for each party's party at the party convention. The primary elections usually begin with the small state of New Hampshire and continue in the other states until the month of June, when the last elections are held. Some states, like Iowa, carry on caucuses instead of primary elections.

When the last primary elections are over, Democrats and Republicans are holding their national conventions. Here are delegations from all states where they officially elect their presidential candidate. Each state is represented here with several delegates voting on the result of the primary election from their respective state.
