Explanation:

The US bought the project to build the Panama Canal from the french. Colombia also signed the treaty with the US  and granted permission to construct the canal their territory. The US also offered 10 million dollars to Panamanian rebels if they proclaimed their independence from Colombia. When Panama gained independence, it granted control of the Panama canal zone to the US and signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty. The work for the Panama canal started immediately.
