Usually a single layer of closely-packed cells, epidermal tissue covers leaves and young stems and roots of vascular plants. Most epidermal cells secrete waxy substances which form a cuticle, or waterproof covering, over the aerial surfaces of the plant, such as the stems and leaves. The cuticle also resists viral, bacterial, and fungal invasion.
