The colonies initially split because they believed that the king was taxing them without representation. One of the main reasons they different so much was that the colonies developed a body of government and attempted to balance the powers. In other words, it was a republic, rather than having a king or queen to rule over. Another major was that the way of life differed in the colonies is that the colonies were very big on liberty, laissez faire, and the "invisible hand" rule in their economic system. While England let the government take care of things, the colonies strongly believed at the time in less government intervention and instead to let things take their own course.
