It is a moment when Annie starts realizing that the island is not for her, i.e, she is not comfortable here. The situation deals with Annie's choice between her mother and self-identification in the context of the island where the latter represents her mother's influence to this identity. The second phrase describes how she has become a grown girl, yet still is treated like a child.
