The Judiciary Act of 1801 expanded the power of the federal judicial branch. Through Adams' presidency many debates occurred on the power for the federal court. Federalists like Adams believed the federal court needed more power and Democratic-Republicans like Thomas Jefferson believed the states should have the most powerful courts. In an act to save the federal power of the court system, Adams enacted the Judiciary Act of 1801.
