The correct answer is D) Athens lost its empire and influence as a model of democracy

The war ended with the victory of Sparta and its allies. Athens was in political turmoil, Democracy was overthrown and its hegemony ended. The city struggled to recover from it. Sparta became the number one city-state in Greece for a short time, because its ambition dragged the city into another conflict, the city had to be ceded to Persian control.

The most significant result of the Peloponnesian War as Athens lost its empire and influence as a model of democracy.

Further Explanations:

Athens and Spartans were two pronounced cities of ancient Greece, often engaged in conflict with each other as being afraid of each other. They thought that the rise of one will lead to the demise of the other one. Their conflict was only for the supremacy of their empire.

The war initiated a grand strategy that aimed at destroying enemies and protection of their existence. The great strategy promoted basic principles that aimed at “rejection of appeasement” and “avoidance of over extension”. The whole battle was divided into three segments and the final phase was known as the “Decelean war” in which the Spartans got the support from the Achaemenid Empire. The war came to end by the fleet of Athens and by signing the peace treaty of Nicias. The war shifted the powers in the hands of Sparta and made it the most powerful kingdom.
