Read Mark Twain's "Two Ways of Seeing a River." What claim does Twain make in this persuasive essay?

In this essay, Twain claims that knowledge changes the way you see the river. At first sight, you will get enchanted with the beauty and charm but the more you look, the less impressed you will become. You will begin to see the river as source of information (whether this information is from the water current, the banks of the river or the hazards that you meet while sailing there).

This perspective can also be applied to life. When your young, you only see the beauty and charm in life, however, as you grow up, you start to develop knowledge about life, you start to see the opportunities and sacrifices and the way you see your life changes.

1 Complete the reported speech. 8.1
Artemon [7]

Answer:

She said she<u> was wearing</u> her sister's jacket.

Explanation:

Reported speech involves shifting the tense back to the past. In that matter, the Present Continuous turns into Past Continuous in reported speech. Thus, in the sentence given, in direct speech, the verb <em>'m wearing</em> becomes <em>was wearing</em> in reported speech.

Apart from changes in verb tenses, other words such as pronouns, demonstratives and adverb phrases also change in reported speech. For example, <em>my sister</em> is reported as <em>her sister</em>.
