Inside the book Endurance, Elephant Island was first described as "heaven sent", but in the end because of horrid condition and the barren landscape, it was seen as the underworld, where the crew of Endurance only stayed because the only other option was to be in the treacherous ocean, in which, without the Endurance, their survivability is almost none.
