  • It constitutes approximately 30% of Earth's freshwater.
  • It is the only viable source of freshwater in some areas.

Explanation:

Groundwater is water that is located under the surface of the earth in the rocks of the crust usually filled by the percolation of water from precipitation. During drought, when all surface waters have dried up, wells can be dug to access groundwater in aquifers. This groundwater is also important in regions where surface waters have been contaminated such as by industrial waste.  However, it is important that this water is not overdrawn. The rate at which it is drawn should match the rate at which the waters are refilled by percolating water into the ground.
