Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power stations

Generating electricity using nuclear reactors carries high risk but offers large rewards. In operation, a very small amount of nuclear fuel will consistently generate a very large amount of electricity and generate very little polluting material. However, the financial costs of building and decommissioning a nuclear power station are very large, and the waste produced will remain radioactive - hazardous to humans and the environment - for thousands of years.

Produces no polluting gases. Waste is radioactive and safe disposal is very difficult and expensive.

Does not contribute to global warming.Local thermal pollution from wastewater affects marine life.

Very low fuel costs. Large-scale accidents can be catastrophic.

Low fuel quantity reduces mining and transportation effects on environment. Public perception of nuclear power is negative.

High technology research required benefits other industries.Costs of building and safely decommissioning are very high.

Power station has very long lifetime.Cannot react quickly to changes in electricity demand.

Answer:

1. Total amount of useful high energy available from a resource MINUS energy needed to make energy available to consumers.

it is important for evaluating energy resources because any energy resource with a low or negative net energy yield cannot compete in open markets with alternatives that have high net energy yields.

2. Pollution is a major disadvantage of fossil fuels. This is because they give off carbon dioxide when burned thereby causing a greenhouse effect. This is also the main contributory factor to the global warming experienced by the earth today. Coal also produces carbon dioxide when burned compared to burning oil or gas.

3. Produces no polluting gases. Waste is radioactive and safe disposal is very difficult and expensive. Does not contribute to global warming. Local thermal pollution from wastewater affects marine life.

4. They have low/negative net enrgy yield so it cant compete in open markets. ex: electricity from nuclear power

5. In considering possible energy paths, scientist and energy experts who have evaluted energy alternatives have come to some general conclusions. First, there will be a gradual shift from large, centralized macropower systems to smaller, decentralized micropower systems such as wind turbines, fuels cells for cars, household solar panels, rooftop solar water heaters, small natural gas turbines and statinary fuel cells for houses and commercial buildings.

Hope this helps :)

Why is fishing for some kinds of ocean fish controlled by laws?
lora16 [44]
C is the answer. Due to the current state of the world economy; people, if left to their own devices, would fish as much as possible so they can sell their fish to make money. Current technology means we can catch as many fish as we want (trawlers etc.). The problem with this is that there is only a finite amount of fish in the sea. If we were to fish them without limits in place, we could cause them to go extinct.

What purpose does pyruvate serve in cellular respirations
scoundrel [369]
In order to survive, all the cells in your body need energy. ... To provide this energy, your cells must break down the glucose in your food during a process called glycolysis and convert it into pyruvate, sometimes called pyruvic acid, and the molecule that feeds the Krebs cycle, our second step in cellular respiration.

Small molecules that bind with self-proteins to produce antigenic substances are called ________. reagins antibodies haptens ion
puteri [66]
The answer will be haptens because haptens has the ability of combining to carriers that are large enough to produce antibodies. The large carriers are usually the proteins that binds to it after producing antibodies. The antibodies, ions and reagins does not comply in the question above for antibodies focus more in the immunization. The ions are the electrons that produce positive or negative electric charge and the reagins are the ones responsible in allergic reactions.
