Gabriela Mistral, whose real name was Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, was a Chilean poet and writer born in 1889. She won several awards for her poetic and educational work. However, her greatest prize was the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded in 1945 for her literary works.
It is worth noting that at that time this award had never been granted to a Latin American person and only four women had achieved it before in history.
This means Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American woman to receive the honorable award.
