Why did the United States fail to reach a compromise on slavery? Was there a solution other than war?

History

The US had many attempts at compromise with varying levels of sucess before the Civil War. However, when Lincoln was elected president (on the platform of stopping the expansion of slavery), the South lost hope and seceded.
There is always a solution other than war, however, in this case, war had been a looming possibility for quite some time, and compromise probably would've only pushed the war back a year or two.
Hope this helps :)

Which of the following was a consequence of Bacon’s Rebellion?
Juli2301 [7.4K]

Answer:

A.The rebellion brought about the rise of Governor Berkeley.

B.The rebellion brought about a decline in race-based slavery.

C.The rebellion brought about a decline in indentured servitude.

D.The rebellion brought about the forced removal of American Indians.

The answer is C.The rebellion brought about a decline in indentured servitude.

The Rebellion was led by Nathaniel Bacon in 1676 and it involved some whites and blacks who were indentured in uniting to burn down Virginia. This was to show grievances against Governor William Berkeley. The grievances were due to some of his failed policies in tackling some of the challenges of the State of Virginia. The rebellion brought about a decline in indentured servitude.

35 POINTS! Do you think Brown v. Board of Education (1954) served its purpose of societal desegregation well? Or, do you think t
marusya05 [52]
It did in the long run. In the short run it created many issues because there was a rise in extremism, in southern states especially. For starters, racists didn't want to desegregate their schools and public places so they didn't enforce the decision of the court throughout the entire next decade. Another thing is that organizations that were illegal like the Ku Klux Klan started getting power and harassing innocent African-Americans. It did create a litigious environment however because suddenly there were many more cases regarding desegregation and they had the court's precedence support so they were easily won because of the way the legal system works. It didn't lack legal justification, the only problem was enforcing it before the civil rights acts were passed and the country started battling racism systematically in all of the United States.

Which was a goal of both the Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise) and the Compromise of 1850?
JulsSmile [24]

Each of these events and actions dealt with the extension of slavery into the western territories. The Missouri Compromise (1820) banned slavery 36 degrees latitude. The Compromise of 1850 allowed for popular sovereignty (voters decide) in the Mexican Cession territory.
