The correct answer among all the other choices is c. have been handed down through many generations. The speaker used the images in this sentence to most likely imply that the scales have been handed down through many generations. Thank you for posting your question. I hope this answer helped you. The correct answer would be option C: "have been handed down through many generations". The speaker gave many examples in the excerpt of how his grandfather's grandparents had used the Balek scales such as: "their grubby hands holding their little baskets of mushrooms", to show that the scales are a family relic and where passed down until they reached the speaker.

The speaker does not say or imply that the scales have never moved, nor that those that use them feel frightened or intimidated. He also never says anything that implies that the scales do not work, therefore options A, B and D are incorrect.

One of the most important themes of Civil Disobedience is the idea that we have the responsibility as citizens to point out the immoral aspects of our society, even if they are enshrined in the political order and culture of our society. Thoreau feels that society as a whole not only can wrong on moral issues but quite often is. It is the responsibility of each citizen to go against the grain when an injustice is discovered, and take the courageous step to hold a mirror to society to open the people's eyes to this injustice.

The oxymoron creates a contradictory mood, emphasizing the confused nature of love.

Explanation:

The oxymoron is a figure of speech that allows to present a paradox in the text, that is, the oxymoron presents in the same sentence, two contrary information, but that are complemented in some way.

In the text presented above, the oxymoron is seen in the lines "the sweetest honey / Is loathsome in his own deliciousness". With this sentence, the author creates a contradictory mood, but presents a characteristic love as something confused, but pleasurable.
