The wall itself was built in 1961 after a large amount of people fled the from the East Berlin to the West Berlin that is from East Germany to the West Germany. Many were not satisfied with the totalitarian system imposed by the Soviet Union but that was the problem for the Soviets as they were losing workers. After the Wall was built and Kennedy's visit to Berlin and his speech "Let them Come to Berlin" we clearly see that the wall was  a tool of political oppression and the dividing line between the free and communist world.
