The Black Death, also known as the Black Plague, refers to a series of pandemic diseases which took the lives of almost 200 million people in Eurasia over the years from 1347 to 1351. The actual cause of the plague was the lack of hygiene, helped by the outbreak of <em>Yersinia pestis</em>, bacteria carried by rats, rather than Satan himself, as was commonly believed.
