It is ironic that many governments are monarchies because the people "want democracy".

It is difficult to be patriot, because people do not want to be "the enemy of the rest of mankind."

to be patriot, one must encourage trade and be strong, however, that means making enemies. Monarchies usually want few enemies, and as it is easy to have trading partners, if they want few enemies, it rules out "being strong" in a sense
