Select the correct text(s) in the passage. In this excerpt from a video transcript, which two parts demonstrate the use of emoti

onal appeal as a persuasive technique? NARRATOR: As Arctic ice continues to melt, it will cause ripple effects across the planet. When the polar regions warm, even just a degree, it disturbs atmospheric and oceanic patterns. The patterns of the jet stream will be affected, which may lead to more extreme summer and winter weather events in Europe, Asia, and North America. Not only will our weather change, but sea level will rise too. Sea ice melt itself does not cause sea levels to rise because the ice is already in the water. But the melting of ice on a land surface, like Greenland, does because new water is flowing into the ocean. In addition, as ocean water warms, it expands, which also raises sea level. Warmer air temperatures will accelerate the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet, which contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by more than 20 feet. Sea ice creates a unique ecosystem that supports millions of plants and animals, from krill and ice algae to cod and walruses. Both the topside and underside of the ice provides places for the animals to hunt, hide, rest, mate, and give birth. Without sea ice, arctic plants and animals must either adapt or migrate. If they can’t, they will go extinct. If that isn’t enough, people who live in coastal communities within the Arctic Circle are also battling erosion along their coastlines. Sea ice serves as a buffer against wave action. Without it, the wind blows across a larger region of open water, resulting in stronger winds and bigger waves that erode the shoreline. These communities must relocate inland or their homes and land could be washed out to sea. For ice in the Arctic, it’s a race against time. If humans do not change what we are doing to the global climate, the ice will continue to disappear and life as we know it will be altered.

There are two parts of the text which demonstrate the use of emotional appeal as a persuasive technique. Let's explain them separately:

The first part in which the speaker uses emotional appeal is: "Without sea ice, arctic plants and animals must either adapt or migrate. If they can’t, they will go extinct". Up until that point, the speaker was only explaining the facts and the consequences of these facts. Then, when he/she started talking about what those facts could do to living beings, creating awareness about the possibility of their extinction, the speaker made the reader also responsible for their lives. Therefore, the speaker created proximity and made the reader emotionally moved by his speech.

The second part in which the speaker uses emotional appeal is: "These communities must relocate inland or their homes and land could be washed out to sea". Here, he/she shows the reader what could happen not only to animals but also to people as a consequence of the facts he/she described. Using the expression "If that isn't enough", the speaker leads the reader from a bad scenario to an even worse one, where the changes described would affect negatively people like the reader himself, creating empathy and, through it, making the reader feel connected to the issue and responsible for his equals.

Answer:

For Plato users, the answer would be, "These communities must relocate inland or their homes and land could be washed out to sea." and "The patterns of the jet stream will be affected, which may lead to more extreme summer and winter weather events in Europe, Asia, and North America. Not only will our weather change, but sea level will rise too."

Explanation:

These two line show emotional appeal as a persuasive technique.

Comparison between mathemagician and king azaz
Mazyrski [523]
Hey there!
I take it we're talking about The Phantom Tollbooth.
In this story, the two Kingdoms- Digitopolis and Dictionopolis, ruled by the Mathemagician and King Azaz, are not at peace.
The Mathemagician believes that numbers are better than words, and Azaz thinks otherwise, and they refuse to talk with each other.
However, they both are the same in one aspect because they both agree on something, and that is that they always will agree that they always will disagree with each other.
Also, towards the end of the book (no spoilers!) they begin to realize the true meaning of working together to save the day.
Hope this helps
