Kublai Khan, leader of the Mongols, tried to invade Indonesia in 1293. He sent 25,000 soldiers to invade the island of Java because King Kertanegara did not accept to pay any tribute to the Mongols. Kublai Khan threatened many kings in different territories saying that they had to pay tribute in order to be protected by the Mongols. King Kertanegara resisted the invasion and his troops defeated the Mongols and maintained its independence.
