What advantages did steam-powered machinery have over water-powered machinery?

The answer to the question above is water-powered machinery requires continuous running water for it to work. While steam-powered machinery requires water to produce steam, it is still different and advantageous compared to water-powered because it does not require continuous running water.

1)  Steam-powered machinery produced goods way faster than water-powered machinery.

2) Steam-powered machinery is not required to be near a river or a water source, so it can be positioned almost anywhere.
